Staying Hidden in a Surveillance State
The amout of cameras in the world right now is scary. How are we supposed to do to keep our privacy in-tact, or at least less infringed upon, as we can?
What if we want to exercise our right to protest but want to keep our identity safe from those who might wish us harm if they found out who we were?
Tricking Facial Detection Systems
Common acessories include:
- Sunglasses
- Medical face masks
- Baseball or wide brimmed hats
- Scarves
What if I live in state where face masks/coverings are illegal?
For many states in the US these laws were passed to prevent members of the KKK or other racially charged groups from hiding their identity, but now these laws have had annoying effects for people who want to exercise their right to protest but maintain anonymity and keep safe from groups of people who could find their identity online. Or even people who observe religious reasons for covering their face.
Use These Less known accessories:
- Clothing with faces on them
- Infared cloth or sunglasses
- Clothing with license plates, barcodes, or QR codes on them

- Dazzle makeup
What is Dazzle Makeup?
Dazzle makeup is an artistis aesthetic where one creates random shapes across your face to break up the typical shadows on ones face.
FUN FACT: Dazzle makeup was insprired by "Dazzle Ships" in WWI. The UK was the first to use this paint job on their ships and then the US later adapted it as well. It's a method of camouflage, but not intended to concean but to confuse. It was mean to make it hard for nazy misiles to estimate a target's range, speed, and heading.
Next time you want to try and throw off some facial detection cameras, consider putting any wierd thing on your face. From funky make-up to facepaint or glue-on accessories like safety pins, rhinestones, chains, wigs, flowers. Paint a barcode or a QR code somewhere on your face.
Keep in mind, different facial detection systems have different built in parameters. So while you might be able to fool one system, you might not be able to fool another one.
General Suggestions to keep in mind to avoid Facial and other Detection
- Avoid Enhancers: We want to blur the lines between typical facial features, not amplify them.
- Partially Obscure the Nosebridge Area: The region where the nose, eyes, and forehead intersect is a key facial feature.
- Partially Obsure the Ocular Region: The position and darkness of eyes is also a key facial feature.
- Remain Inconspicuous: Avoid logos and brands on your clothing. Cover up tattoos and piercings.
Even though this is not an inconspicuous option, if you manage to trick systems from your face, gait detection systems have become very sophisticated recently. These will record the distance between your steps, along with any other notable features about how you walk. Even if you’re not trying to trick a system with this, I highly recommend taking some pointers from The Ministry of Silly walks to add some whimsy into your life!
